چکیده

Incorporating indigenous knowledge into fisheries management is becoming increasingly important in the derivation of alternative management solutions. It also satisfies the political demands of indigenous communities to exercise their rights and responsibilities to traditional resources and their management. Using a methodology that considers perceptions or constructs of the environment to be dependent on the social and cultural structures in which they operate, we compare indigenous and government management of sea mullet in Moreton Bay, Australia. Our investigation focuses specifically on the landscape and seascape constructs of the Queensland Fisheries Service (QFS) and the traditional Aboriginal community of Moreton Bay – the people of Quandamooka. Results from the case study indicate that while both management parties aspire to achieve ecologically sustainable development, a divergence between the constructs of the QFS and the Quandamooka community for sea mullet management is evident. Current QFS approaches reflect ‘scientific truth’ and economically-dominated strategies whilst the Quandamooka community approach represents constructivist and holistic ecosystems-based strategies. The research highlights the need for more collaborative and inclusive fisheries management approaches that move beyond viewing the Quandamooka community as just another stakeholder. We argue that the QFS needs to recognize the relationship between the Quandamooka community and the Bay in order to value indigenous knowledge of the Bay and its resources. Furthermore, it is critical for the QFS to move beyond economic and species-specific dominated strategies towards ecosystem and adaptive management strategies to include indigenous knowledge and to achieve ecologically sustainable development.

Benthic foraminiferal assemblages from Moreton Bay, South-East Queensland, Australia: applications in monitoring water and substrate quality in subtropical estuarine environments.

We assess species composition, assemblage structure and distribution of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages from diverse substrates in Moreton Bay, South-East Queensland, Australia. Analysis of 47 surface sediment samples revealed 69 species, three distinct foraminiferal assemblages and six sub-assemblages. The assemblages from the western Bay are characterized by stress tolerant taxa and the...

Rising temperatures increased recruitment of brown tiger prawn (Penaeus esculentus) in Moreton Bay (Australia)

Abiotic factors are fundamental drivers of the dynamics of wild marine fish populations. Identifying and quantifying their influence on species targeted by the fishing industry is difficult and very important for managing fisheries in a changing climate. Using multiple regression, we investigated the influence of both temperature and rainfall on the variability of recruitment of a tropical spec...

Preliminary assessment of the performance of Hyperion in coastal waters. Cal/Val activities in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia

Moreton Bay is the Australian EO1-Hyperion coastal site used for Cal/Val activities. Moreton Bay shows spatial gradients in optical depth, bathymetry, and substrate composition. The turbid and humic river inputs, as well as the open ocean flushing, determine the water quality of the bay. Recently lyngbya toxic algae blooms have become a serious environmental and health concern. The field campai...

Vision and remote sensing: using nature’s technology to examine the health of The Great Barrier Reef and Moreton Bay

Tasks such as discriminating young from old leaves, vegetation from mud, living from dead coral and spotting the presence of a fish against varied backgrounds are solved as a matter of course every day by animal visual systems. These jobs for vision are important for survival and as a result have become exquisitely tuned through the process of evolution. All of these examples are visual problem...

First Report of a Toxic Nodularia spumigena (Nostocales/ Cyanobacteria) Bloom in Sub-Tropical Australia. II. Bioaccumulation of Nodularin in Isolated Populations of Mullet (Mugilidae)

Fish collected after a mass mortality at an artificial lake in south-east Queensland, Australia, were examined for the presence of nodularin as the lake had earlier been affected by a Nodularia bloom. Methanol extracts of muscle, liver, peritoneal and stomach contents were analysed by HPLC and tandem mass spectrometry; histological examination was conducted on livers from captured mullet. Liver...
